On Wednesday, Connect transit was awarded over $9 million thanks to grants gifted from Illinois governor JB Pritzker.
Bloomington-Normal’s Connect Transit is one of 32 downstate transportation services to receive part of this $114 million aid from Pritzker, the State of Illinois Legislature and the Illinois Department of Transportation. This comes as a part of the Rebuild Illinois plan set into place in June of 2019 marking the first initiative of its kind since 2009. In total Connect Transit will receive $ 9.6 million.
“We’d like to thank Governor Pritzker, our local delegation, and IDOT for their continued support of Connect Transit and public transportation,” Ryan Whitehouse Connect Transit Board Chairman said. “These funds allow us to continue investing in modern vehicles and equipment to better serve our community.”
By the time the Rebuild Illinois project is completed, it will spend more than $44.8 million in capital funding and $33.2 million being allocated specifically for transportation projects. Connect Transit will use its funding to continue the development and implementation of an on-demand transportation service called Microtransit. The service will also use part of the funds for updated construction in the area by local construction companies.
