Bloomington’s Central Illinois Regional Airport was named Primary Airport of the year by the Illinois Department of Transportation Monday during the Illinois Public Airports Association Fall Conference in Galena.

“Our community should be proud of this recognition by the state transportation department, “ said Alan Sender, Chairman of the Bloomington Normal Airport Authority. “IDOT sees what the community knows well; that CIRA’s customer service, outstanding safety record, modern and convenient facilities and high-quality aviation services are an invaluable asset to McLean County and Central Illinois.

“Kudos to Carl Olson, his dedication who work at CIRA for achieving this well-deserved recognition,” Sender continued.

CIRA earned the award due to the airports’ ‘outstanding relationship with IDOT and a strong commitment to customer safety and satisfaction in select criteria,’ IDOT said when handing out the award.

The conference defines a primary airport as a commercial airport that handles more than 10,000 passengers yearly. CIRA houses four primary commercial airlines Allegiant, American, Delta and Frontier. Built in 2001 for $14 million, the airport has flights to major airports in Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, Dallas, Orlando and Denver.

CIRA was also up for awards in state, safety record, maintenance of the facility, and promotion of aviation and educational events, but did not bring them home.
